First Flush Darjeeling Tea

First Flush Darjeeling Tea | Imperial Teas

First flush teas from Darjeeling are amongst the most highly sought after in the world. The unique character of these early spring teas from the foothills of Himalayas makes them difficult to classify. They are barely oxidised so cannot truly be called black tea, although they share the same briskness and rich flavour. The infusion is as pale as a green tea or green oolong tea but is very different in flavour, so we cannot place them in that category either. Typically, the best qualities, which are the teas we deal in, have a fragrant, floral character, a refreshing, complex infusion and in the dry leaf an aroma reminiscent of fresh blackcurrants on the bush. Oddly, the better these teas are the more difficult they are to brew! I recommend the use of an infuser or infuser teapot to take the leaves out at two minutes infusion time. This preserves the desired bright, lively character and pleasant astringency. Too long and these teas can really bite back. The more intense types benefit from using off-the-boil water too. They are best appreciated without milk although a longer brewing time will yield sufficient colour to take a splash. If you want to enjoy it Indian style try it with a lump of sugar. The first flush term refers to teas plucked from March to May in the gardens of Darjeeling. Each ‘invoice’ from the 80 or so gardens is unique and amounts to approximately just 90kgs. The teas we source are from gardens where sound social and environmental policies are in place. They belong to many associations including IMO, USDA Organic, India Organic, Ethical Tea Partnership, Fairtrade, UTZ and the Rainforest Alliance.
