Hacienda Carmona has been lovingly tended by octogenarian Maria Zelaya since 1959, and their prized Café Pulcal stands as one of the world's most complete and rewarding coffees. Harvested from heritage Bourbon varietal beans — both red and yellow — this extraordinary coffee is washed in pure mountain water and dried naturally in the sun. With annual production under 800 bags, we're genuinely privileged to secure our allocation.
The tasting experience is genuinely captivating. Cup of Excellence judges noted berry, tangerine, caramel, dark chocolate, lime, kiwi, honey and plum alongside hints of blackberry, cherry and orange. What we adore most is its almost Nutella-like richness, with lemony undertones and freshly milled pepper spice — all rounded by chocolate, caramel and orange notes with a fig-like sweetness that lingers beautifully.
Antigua's volcanic terroir is legendary. Nestled nearly 6,000 feet above sea level in Sacatepequez, Hacienda Carmona sits within a true microclimate. Occasional ash from Fuego — one of Guatemala's three active volcanoes — dusts the soil with mineral richness, while volcanic pumice retains precious moisture in the region's drier climate. Dense shade cultivation protects the trees from December's frosty nights, creating the distinctive conditions that make Antigua coffee unmistakably itself.
This is coffee worth savouring slowly, cup by thoughtful cup.
