Dark Roast

For those who love their coffee with depth, richness and a wonderfully lingering intensity, there's something deeply satisfying about a beautifully crafted dark roast.

As coffee spends longer developing in the roaster, its character undergoes a remarkable transformation. The brighter, more delicate flavours associated with lighter roasting gradually recede, giving way to deeper, more pronounced roasted notes. Think bittersweet dark chocolate, toasted nuts, dark caramel and sometimes a beautifully smoky richness.

The result can be a wonderfully full-flavoured coffee with a rounded body, a lingering finish and the comforting intensity that so many coffee lovers adore.

But dark roasting requires care. Push a coffee too far and those lovely flavours can become overwhelmed by harsh bitterness and burnt notes. At Imperial Teas, we believe a great dark roast should be bold but never unnecessarily aggressive. Our aim is to develop richness, depth and a satisfying sweetness, while preserving enough character to make every cup a genuine pleasure.

We carefully select our green coffee beans and roast them here in Lincoln, creating coffees that offer the robust character dark roast enthusiasts enjoy. They're particularly rewarding as espresso, in a cafetière or when paired with milk, where their deep flavours can really come into their own.

And while dark roast is often described as stronger, that refers to its intensity of flavour rather than necessarily containing more caffeine.

Because a great dark roast isn't about roasting the character out of a coffee. It's about discovering just how deliciously rich that character can become.
