The Original Chocolate Covered Liquorice

This is where Lakrids by Bülow’s chocolate-covered liquorice story really began.

The Original combines soft sweet liquorice with smooth milk chocolate, finished with a fine dusting of liquorice powder. It sounds simple, but the balance is what makes it so good: creamy chocolate first, then the deeper sweetness of liquorice, with the powder on the outside giving an extra aromatic liquorice hit at the finish.

It was the first chocolate-coated liquorice Johan Bülow developed, and the idea was initially met with some scepticism in Denmark. It quickly became one of the defining products of the range. 

For us, this is probably the clearest example of why Lakrids by Bülow belongs alongside fine tea and coffee. The flavours are layered and balanced rather than simply sweet, and there is enough richness and complexity to make each piece feel like a small tasting experience in its own right.

I’d pair The Original particularly with Assam, breakfast tea, richer black teas or a smooth medium-roast coffee. The milk chocolate softens the liquorice beautifully, while roasted and malty flavours in the drink complement it very naturally.

Ingredients

Liquorice coated with milk chocolate:

63% milk chocolate (EU) (sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, cocoa mass, emulsifiers: soy lecithin, lecithin; natural vanilla flavour), rice flour, sugar, invert sugar syrup, treacle, glucose syrup, 3% raw liquorice (non-EU), rapeseed oil, salt, glazing agent: shellac, anise oil.

Minimum 34% cocoa solids. Minimum 18% milk solids.
