Thanks to the low caffeine content and mild character this tea is consumed all day in Japan. In previous eras, it was drunk mainly by the poor population of Japan as the rice content helped to keep the price low. The sugar and starch content also meant it could also be used for fasting and by those who had to go a long time between meals. The infusion is a light yellow and it has a warming character. Genmai means "natural rice.
