This lemon verbena is grown in Spain and although a member of the verbena, or vervain, family it is this particular variety, Aloysia Triphylla, that contains the most essential oil. It contains many fragrant compounds as well as limonene, including geranium and neroli, which all contribute to its pleasant taste. The extracted essential oil is used in food and fragrance. The fresh lemon flavour can have calming and digestive qualities. It is thought to have a mild tonic effect upon the nervous system and can help to lift the spirits. It is also alleged to have a mildly sedative effect, which is thought to aid relaxation and is often used in herbal blends aimed at bedtime drinking. It is commonly known as Lemon Beebrush.
