ALKO Honey – Kerinci, Sumatra, Indonesia

This standout honey-processed lot comes from the ALKO Cooperative, a collective of over 400 smallholder farmers on the volcanic slopes of Mount Kerinci in West Sumatra. These high-altitude farms, located between 1,300 and 1,650 metres, benefit from rich soil, dense forest shade, and consistent rainfall — ideal conditions for producing distinctive specialty coffees.

The ALKO Honey lot is processed using a traditional honey method with precise control. Ripe red cherries are pulped and fermented for up to 30 hours without being washed, allowing the mucilage to remain on the parchment. This extended contact enhances fruit character and body. Drying is done slowly over 15–20 days, further developing the coffee’s sweetness and complexity.

The result is a rich, smooth cup with notes of plum, dark chocolate, and balsamic, balanced by gentle acidity and a clean finish. Hints of marmalade-like sweetness round out the flavour profile, making this an approachable yet complex coffee suitable for a variety of brewing methods.

ALKO is known for its commitment to traceability, sustainability, and gender equity. The co-op employs blockchain-based tracking systems to ensure transparency from farm to export, and actively supports the empowerment of women in its coffee-growing communities. By protecting the surrounding national park ecosystem and ensuring fair income for its members, ALKO exemplifies ethical, community-driven coffee production.

This is a modern Sumatran coffee — layered, sweet, and clean — well-suited to filter, espresso, and cold brew styles alike.
