This tea bowl, known as a Yunomi, is made by a master craftsman, Takumi, and is presented in a wooden box. The finish and shape are artfully rustic, almost as if hewn from the earth formed by centuries of pressure like a gemstone. The Mino area, in the southern part of the Japanese Prefecture Gifu, make this pottery known as Mino-Yaki and has been produced for more than 1000 years. A wide range of techniques such as Oribe, Shino, Kizeto, etc. are used to create a wide variety of tableware and tea ceremony items.
